Boezemvriend » Baby, Boob, Shop and Cafe

Now that I’m a mother, I need to selectively search for those places where I can open my laptop, do some work, enjoy a coffee and breastfeed my baby without people giving me that strange look. Even though breastfeeding is totally natural and a necessity for your baby, some people still think it’s strange when a woman is breastfeeding her child in public. Boezemvriend is one of those places where it’s possible to do this without feeling weird about it while enjoying a tasty latte.

Still controversial even though breastfeeding is the world’s most natural thing. Source

Breastfeeding Consultancy
As a new mother I know how tough the first few weeks can be when it comes to breastfeeding. Boezemvriend is a lactation consultancy practice, where you can ask all your questions about and around breastfeeding. You can also book a lactation consultant (if needed, they can visit you at home), you can follow courses and buy or rent breast pumps. (always handy!) If you want to check if it’s for you, you can join their monthly birth cafe where you can ask questions to a professional consultant and meet new parents, for free!

Who says that breastfeeding-friendly cafe’s can’t be cool?

The Cafe
Super nice! I was surprised about the great tasting coffee, healthy muffins and the best hummus & grilled vegetables sandwich I ever tasted! Yes, this cafe isn’t just a secondary attachment to Boezenvriend, no it’s a place I would recommend to all people. And yes, it’s mostly visited by mothers (or fathers) with a baby or young child. It’s particularly great for that group of customers because you can totally relax. When a baby is crying, no one is looking annoyed because they all understand. Breastfeeding is only encouraged (and the women are still very discreet, covering their breast with a small blanket)

The Store
Here you can find all sorts of baby related stuff. From clothes, blankets, car seats, baby carriers to maternity wear. Labels are mostly organic and super stylish. It’s not cheap but the quality is very good so if you want to score a great baby present for you or a friend, Boezemvriend is a great option!

Koala Republic Amsterdam

Innovating seats, a Scandinavian and Japanese look plus healthy homemade food. Koala Republic has opened their doors on the Jan Evertsenstraat in Amsterdam West.

The Jan-Eef, as locals call it, is one of the most developing streets in Amsterdam at the moment. 5 years ago it may have looked a bit miserable, but once the Mercatorsquare was re-done, the rest of the neighborhood followed the example and new entrepreneurs saw the light. One by one, new shops and coffee bars started opening (like T’s where we love to drink our popcorn tea!)

Koala Republic
Innovating seats at Koala Republic

Koala Republic is one of those new hotspots and you may discovered it by chance because it’s a bit tucked away next to a döner shop and a jewelry store. We walked inside for a quick peek and immediately took note of the cool interior. There is a sky high table for 2 where you’ll need to climb the stairs, and there are seats with swings for your feet. You can also sit on the bright orange cushions, chill at the bar or grab a larger table in the back.

Where will you sit?

The food menu at Koala Republic is very healthy but far from being boring. Everything is homemade. From eggs to a Indonesian style chicken broth (Soto) and a corn tortilla wrap, they even serve healthy fries made from vegetables served with a wasabi mayonaise. Besides eating in, you can also buy some of their products like coffee and peanut butter.

Go and check this new place out, even if it’s only to climb up those stairs and drink your coffee from a new perspective.

5 x The Best Breakfast Spots in West Village, New York

In a completely food-obsessed city, the West Village seems to be a breakfast focal point. Not only is the food incredible, but the environment of that particular neighborhood gives you a warm and fuzzy feeling to kick off the start of your day. Instead of skyscrapers, you’ll find brownstone, pre-war buildings complete with classic New York fire escapes and every tree-lined, cobblestone street seems to be the home of some cozy, quaint restaurant packed with people looking for a delicious meal and good coffee. Although I’m sure there are dozens of fabulous options to choose from, here are five of my favorite Breakfast Spots In West Village.

Hundred Acres – 38 Macdougal St
Located right on the borderline of the West Village, SoHo and Greenwich Village, Hundred Acres is a Mediterranean style restaurant that never disappoints at breakfast time. Unlike a lot of other typical NYC breakfast spots, Hundred Acres is spacious so a good choice is you have a large party – and they have a backyard garden area! They also take reservations on OpenTable which is super convenient when looking for the right place to eat. The lemon ricotta pancakes and the cinnamon rolls are both superb! www.hundredacresnyc.com

Monument Lane – 103 Greenwich Ave
Any place with chicken & waffles on the menu gets an automatic thumbs up in my book. With outside seating during the warmer seasons, Monument Lane is a great place to people watch. Good food, friendly staff and a varying menu with plenty of different options to choose from – what more could you ask for?! They also give you an adorable little notebook to sign when you get the bill – it’s all about the little details and one of the reasons why it’s one of my favorite breakfast spots in West Village. www.monumentlane.com

Bluestone Lane – 30 Carmine St (*multiple locations)
A casual, Australian cafe that serves great coffee and simple brunch items. One of my favorite things about it – the staff are all Aussies! I like that this cafe gives me a taste of a different part of the world, all the way down to the carefully chosen decor. The avocado smash and the berry bowl are both delicious! www.bluestonelaneny.com

The Wild Son – 53 Little W 12th St
This restaurant is located on the border of the West Village and The Meatpacking District right next to the Hudson River. It’s small, so not ideal for large parties, but if you’re looking for a place to grab a coffee and some breakfast with a friend, this adorable restaurant is a great choice. They don’t take reservations, but stop in to put your name down and take a stroll along The High Line while you wait. You can’t go wrong with the blueberry corn waffles! www.thewildsonnyc.com

Now open » Food Canteen Yumler

I live in Amsterdam New West and although this is outside the infamous “ring” road in Amsterdam, it is slowly becoming a place for new businesses, start ups and cool places. Last year De School and restaurant Bureau proved that New West is developing and the locals love it. This week it was time to add another name to the area and Yumler openend. Time to check out what this place is all about.

Eat In, Take Out & Delivery Concept
You can describe Yumler as a fancy/ hip & happening food canteen. It’s a 3.0 canteen version that is now situated in an old building that used to function as the gymnastic class from a technical University. The idea behind Yumler is that the food is good, healthy but reasonably priced. There is no table service but you order and pay at the bar where you can take your own drinks and sandwiches to your table. The concept was designed for the YOUNG URBAN CITIZEN that doesn’t always have the time for grocery shopping and cooking. You can eat in, take out or use the Yumler app to order your food and get it delivered at your doorstep.

Yumler Canteen

“Yumler  is not there for the ‘guilty pleasure’. We are here for all those other times in the week, when you want to eat healthy but do not have the time to cook. ” – Andras Caron, founder Yumler

Yumler is an idea from entrepreneurs Andras Caron (son of French chef Alain Caron and founder of big events like Valhalla and Amsterdam Open Air) and Jan Willem van der Kuip (co-founder of the Vondel Gym). Their inspiration comes from chefs like Yotam Ottolenghi, Donna Hay en Jamie Oliver. A lot of variation, low key, tasty and affordable. The most expensive dish on the menu is €12,-. The menu will change on a weekly basis and the dishes are nutritious and healthy.

yumler interior

We really love the interior which features a lot of green combined with trendy lights, steel furniture that will make this canteen look slick yet cozy. Andras Caron told us that they will also use the space to host parties and Friday after work drinks. And even better, they have a huge terrace that will open as soon as the sun is out. We can’t wait for the app to be live so I, Elke can finally order some decent food even though I do not live inside “The Ring” of Amsterdam.

The First Ever Vegan Food Court Will Open in New York

We love New York because it’s constantly evolving and discovering new trends. Food is a big thing over there and even though New York is a big city with lot’s of pollution, it’s also becoming more conscious about sustainability, health and animal welfare. We were happy to hear that the big apple will open the world’s first vegan food court!

vegan food court. Photo: danielle-macinnes

Unfortunately we need to wait a while before we can all enjoy this vegan walhalla because they are planning to open in early 2019. The food court will be named Home Food Hall and will be the first permanent food hall serving totally plant-based foods. They are now looking for 15+ vendors from all over the world to take part in the first vegan food court. Some of the vendors are already signed up and among these are the popular Beyond Sushi and Cinnamon Snail, both based in New York.

Beyond sushi will be one of the vendors in the first ever Vegan Food court.

Besides the food they will also open a boutique fitness space hosting yoga, pilates, dance, meditation, kickboxing classes and more. They will also rent spaces where you can host get-togethers, events or private screenings. Home Food Hall will be established in Midtown East.

The Avocado Show reveals their menu and it looks awesome

About 1 month ago we were the first ones to tell you about the soon to be open Avocado Bar, The Avocado Show. The restaurant that will open their doors this February, gained a lot of interest from all over the world. Blogs, online magazines and platforms couldn’t stop talking about it.

Co-owner Ron Simpson recently revealed a few of their test tastings on Instagram and all we can say is; holy guacamole! (see how we did that? ;-))
They haven’t confirmed their dishes just yet but The Avocado Show has posted a picture of a Poke dish that will probably make the cut!

During the test tastings last week, they tried Avocado Pizza, Avocado Ice-Cream (this looked sooo good), Avocado Salads, Avocado Rolls and more.

The Antwerp City Guide by Wander-Lust

If you live in the Netherlands, Antwerp is the perfect place to escape to for a city break. We’ve been there many times and checked out some of the best spots for you to enjoy food, drinks and more. Here’s our Antwerp City Guide!

How to get there
Well, you have 2 options and they are both as easy. You can take the train or you can go by car. Both options take around the same time (2 hours) but we prefer the train because you can chill, look out of the window and you will arrive at one of the most beautiful and impressive trains stations in Europe. A  return train ticket from Amsterdam to Antwerp will cost around 30 -40 euro. If you go by car, you might arrive earlier but if you are unlucky, you will get caught in slow traffic and your trip might take up to 3 hours plus you will have to pay for parking.

“This Antwerp City Guide is for wanderers who love food, shops and exploring”

Antwerp City Guide

Where To Eat?
The most important question of course! Well, in Antwerp you won’t be short of food choices. Especially lunch! There are so many hotspots around that we can’t mention them all, but these are our favorites!
» Tinsel, some say that you can get the best breakfast in town here. Tinsel is located near the water where you will find tons of other restaurants. www.tinsel.be
» Native Bio Bistro, This hidden pearl is by far our favorite lunch spot in Antwerp. This bistro serves fresh, original, and good quality food. It’s organic, locally produced with sustainable ingredients, this is Native! Vegan and organic food lovers will love this place! During the summer they open a very nice terrace. www.native.bio
» Bubble Waffle, located in the Mercado foodcourt, this tasty waffle stand awesome! Go here if you feel like something sweet. www.bubblewaffle.be
» Divers, a smoothie-bowl bar for your healthy cravings. Great for some Instagram worthy pics, if that’s what your after. They are located in the Volkstraat 9.
»De Broers van Julienne, when we need to grab a quick and healthy bite, we go here. In a side street of the Kammenstraat – with lots of boutiques – you will find this small cute little restaurant. You can take away the best quiches, soups,  salads and other warm healthy dishes. Besides that, they sell oil, wine, coffee, juices and other delicatessen. They  also offer catering and cook workshops.
» Raw Salad Company, unfortunately they’ve closed their doors in Antwerp but they promised to be back soon with a new location. The name gives it away. Raw salads galore. The salads are extremely tasty and fill you up enough to get on with your day. They also sell juices, wraps, cakes and other healthy snacks. We will keep you updated if they open a shop.
» Umami
, fine dining Japanese style. They restyled not long ago and you can eat amazing Dim Sum here. www.umami-antwerp.be

» Il Famosi, this is by far the best Italian restaurant in Antwerp. Go here for a romantic dinner and if you want more than just pizza.

Where To Drink Coffee?
» Mirlo’s, the coffee is great and the location is cute. They also serve breakfast and lunch and it’s all homemade. www.mirlos.be
» Buchbar, surrounded by literature and stories, this coffee bar is different than others. Owned by actress Kim Hertogs, you can feel the passion for books, women empowerment and people. Find more info about this special spot on their website.
» Butchers Coffee, located in a former butcher, this trendy coffee bar takes the coffee business serious and are planning to create their own coffee blend. If the sun is out, you can sit outside on the benches. You can find it on the Kasteelstraat 57.
» Caffenation, self blended coffee and probably the oldest one in Belgium as they started more than 13 years ago. Besides the coffee it’s also a shop and a great place to hang out. www.caffenation.be

Where to Shop & Stroll?
You have many options in Antwerp when it comes to shopping. No matter what type of person you are, there will be a shopping district that will suit your needs. We have selected 3 area’s that we love.
» Kammenstraat & Kloosterstraat, these 2 streets in South Antwerp offer vintage, exclusive boutiques, living and alternative shops. While most shops are closed on Sunday, the kloosterstraat is one of the only streets open from around 12pm.
» Het Eilandje, this is especially great during summer because you can find a lot of outside patio’s here. Worth mentioning is the MAS Museum where they have many exhibitions on display. The museum is set next to the little harbor and owns a large rooftop which has free entrance.
» The Meir, this is Antwerp’s highstreet. Although it’s not our favorite place to shop, we need to mention it because here you will find all the shops you need. From Zara, Mango, Levi’s, it’s all here. The street is beautiful but always busy. Watch your purse and don’t stay too long!

Where To Sleep?
Somehow we always end up in the same hotels. Never change a winning team! These are our 2 favorite places to stay.

» Hotel Les Nuits, we love boutique hotels and this hotel is one of the cutest ones out there! All 21 rooms are designed a bit different but have the same style and feature impressive en-suites. They have recently changed their reception area and removed their suites rooms which is a shame because I really loved those but this way the hotel is more compact and fits better together. Breakfast is great and the location is great! Book a room here!

» Banks, another great hotel at a very central location. It’s modern and a great place to meet people downstairs. Oh, and they also have a rooftop terrace so this is a great option during the summer. Then again, you will be out exploring Antwerp..;-) Book your stay here.

So are you planning your next tip to Antwerp yet? ;-)

5 x New Hotspots in Amsterdam for January

I compare Amsterdam to New York and London sometimes because there are so many new places that open up these days, it’s almost impossible to keep track of. Here are 5 new hotspots in Amsterdam that are all open or opening this month!

Sticky Fingers
Coffee, cakes and bites and it’s as simple as that. Sticky Fingers is a place where you will run into a lot of bloggers because it’s very Instagramable. (is that a word?) It’s new on the Amstelveenseweg near the famous Vondelpark so perfect for a break after a walk. The interior is pretty cool because they have a white wall where they molded in some recycled furniture. Amsteveenseweg 3, Amsterdam, www.stickyfingers.nl

Sticky Fingers Amsterdam

Stach at the Overtoom
Stach is a wonderful food and drink store with several franchises around the city but a few days ago they’ve opened a new store on the Overtoom. They will prepare different kinds of healthy foods like  Poke Bowls, Poke Salads, Sushi, Sushi salads, Springrolls and Vietnamese streetfood. Besides all that, they also sell lot’s of ingredients, ready to go meals, chocolate, cookies, healthy bars, coffee and more. I’m glad this store is closer to my home now and I will visit them soon! Lavinia 2
Another very tasty and healthy hotspot that we love! Lavinia 2 is also located on the Amstelveenseweg (new hotspots in Amsterdam galore here?) but a bit closer towards Hoofddorpplein. Lavinia is serving homemade meals and cakes that are all organic. They offer catering and attract all sorts of people that a a little conscious about their health. Like the first Lavinia in the Kerkstraat, you can hire the place for private events in the evening and they also host a number of events. Amstelveenseweg 192, Amsterdam, Website

Libertine Cafe Cafe
Another trick out of box of the biggest food and drink entrepreneur in Amsterdam; Casper Reinders. He recently also opened restaurants Bo Nam and Blue Boy and he just added Libertine Cafe Cafe. They describe themselves as “a place for locals and wanderers alike”. Sounds like us! Situated in central Amsterdam’s 9 streets, it’s a perfect location to say the least. Come here for all day breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks. Wolvenstraat 22, Amsterdam, Facebook

De Biertuin Prinsengracht
A beer garden in the middle of Amsterdam? Yep, it’s happening. Well, it’s a second location but the first one was in East so a bit far for some residents and visitors. This one is located on the spot where BoCinq used to be. It’s near the Leidsestreet so very easy to reach. They will serve a lot of beers, burgers (also veggie), sausages, salads, chips if you have to believe it, a great atmosfeer! They will open this month is all preparations go to plan. Prinsengracht 494, Amsterdam, Facebook

Le Petit Bistro » A bit of Paris in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is full of wonderful hotels. Big, small, luxurious and boutique. Little do we know that a lot of hotels have some of the most amazing restaurants located inside. One by one I am trying to figure them all out and discover the food these restaurants have to offer. One of which particularly got my attention; Le Petit Bistro in Hotel Sofitel Legend The Grand.

Wander-Lust at Le Petit Bistro Amsterdam
Looking out over the garden

The lunch room was founded in 2014 and is part of the well renowned restaurant Bridges (inspired by Ron Blauw). Where at Bridges you can enjoy a fine dining cuisine (the restaurant has a Michelin Star), you can enjoy a wonderful laidback lunch or dinner at Le Petit Bistro. You look out into the hotel garden and the marmer tables and leather chairs give it a true Parisian ambiance. There is enough space for 28 guest and you can also sit at the bar first where guest can enjoy oysters, amuses and a drink before they sit at the table. Hotel and guests of Bridges all sit here.

The Menu
You will find classic dishes on the menu but with a modern twist. I got to enjoy a starter, in between dish and a main course. First up the amuse at the bar of course! This bar is open from 5 till 11pm. New head chef Andrès Delpeut started about in August and managed to create a menu that is very accessible for everyone. Fish, meat or vegetarian, you can feast your taste buds over here. My amuse was a caprese salad on puff pastry and my starter was a rich burrata cheese with small artichokes. For mains I had a colorful vegetable risotto (you can wake me up for this!) and my date had a traditional Boeuf Bourguignon, Parisian mushrooms and bacon. Each plate is different from one another and I enjoyed a surprise menu so I didn’t realize I also received a in-between-dish. For this reason I didn’t managed to find the space for a dessert but if you go here you MUST check them out! (Especially the white chocolate with a grapefruit snowball) Besides the food, they serve some amazing wines and if you want to stay healthy you can order a slow pressed juice from sapje.

Cafe Zurich in Amsterdam West

Cafe Zurich has been around for a number of years now but it’s right to say that this place really changed the face of the Mercatorplein in Amsterdam West. Where before it was an empty dull square, is now a vibrant area where adults chat, eat and drink and children play. During spring and summer the large outside terras is never empty and one of the largest in Amsterdam West. During Autumn and winter it’s a cozy place to drink hot chocolate by the fire place.

cafe-zurich
Cozy and stylish

Cafe Zurich is easy to reach by tram 17 or 13 and there is a parking lot right underneath the restaurant if you come by car. The building has been there for about 90 years and was meant to serve as a place where the neighborhood would come together. Since the new opening of Cafe Zurich, I have been enjoying my latte’s, lunches and dinners here. But due to my busy schedule, I haven’t had the change to pop in for food in a while. Time to find out what the new menu is all about!

The New Menu
I had the privilege to taste several dishes from the menu and I started with a mousse of sweet potato with cauliflower and my boyfriend tried the mackerel with dille, crunchy croutons and lime mayonaise. He got an extra dish of wild deer with red cabbage and mustard gravy. For mains I got lentils with different mushrooms, poached egg and Parmesan cheese. We also tried cod with seasonal veggies plus the my boyfriend tasted the duck with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. Oh, and you should definitely order some of the homemade fries of fries with truffle, yummie! Gosh, my belly was about to pop but I could not resist the banana cake with white chocolate mouse.. oh yes, this was a good dinner.
