NYC Hot Spot »The Standard Biergarten, High Line

Once the long winter comes to an end and we get into the early days of Spring, New Yorkers have one mission: to drink outside! The Standard Biergarten – located on the street level of the trendy Standard Hotel and directly under The High Line, is an unexpected outdoor oasis in the midst of the Meatpacking District. This area (typically known for its boujee nightlife scene) plays host to a relatable clientele of young business professionals, college students, and tourists. If you’re looking for a relaxed place to grab a beer, chat with old friends, and hopefully meet new ones – this is a great place to do it!

standard biergarten
Busy and buzzing!

The Standard Hotel has really added a touch of Europe with their Biergarten

After lining up at the door to buy food and drink tickets, $9 each, and settle in for a German brew and tasty snacks (bratwurst, currywurst or pretzels!), bar-goers enter an open brick-walled space filled with picnic tables and benches. Groups gather for fun-spirited conversation as a festive staff, dressed in festive T-shirts and Oktoberfest-inspired dirndls, serves rounds of beer. The communal tables add to the room’s chipper vibe and make mingling and flirting that much easier, while two free games provide a great ice breaker for meeting other trendy but laid-back neighborhood regulars.

standardbiergarten2

Although the place gets packed wall to wall and can be extremely noisy, the ambiance remains more playful and carefree rather than rowdy. Combined with the sociable crowd, open-air space, and casual atmosphere – makes The Standard Biergarten a solid, upbeat hangout for those looking to waste away the hours over a favorite brew.

High Line Walk
If the weather is particularly nice, make sure to take a walk along the High Line while you’re there! This 1.5 mile long, elevated park was built on an old NYC railroad line and is the perfect portrayal of urbanization. Since opening in 2009, the High Line has become one of Manhattan’s most talked about attractions and possibly the best location for sunset viewing since it’s located on the West side and overlooking the Hudson River!

The Best Terraces and Rooftops in East London

Outdoor drinking spots where you can actually catch some sunshine are rare in London. But when you know your way around you’ll find some hidden treasures all around the city. East London has a couple of the best outdoor vibes for the weekend, enjoy the sunshine, creative vibes and this list of the best terraces and rooftops in East London.

People’s park tavern
360 Victoria Park Rd, London E9 7BT
In Victoria park lies my absolute favourite beer garden: the people’s park tavern. It’s so much more than just a garden, situated in the beautiful park. The tavern hosts mini golf for the kids, has an amazing BBQ going on, and on the weekends it’s the best place to enjoy some live music and chat with some locals. Oh. And did I mention it’s HUGE?

Isn’t it huge?

Pub on the Park
19 Martello St, London E8 3PE
London Fields just off Broadway market is one of the few parks where you can actually have a BBQ in London. You’ll find loads of twenty-somethings and thirty-somethings chilling with their mates on a sunny day here. The Pub on the Park with their big terrace overlooking the park is the perfect spot to enjoy the weekend and get a bit of colour.

Boundary rooftop
2-4 Boundary St, London E2 7DD
In the centre of Shoreditch, east London, you’ll find my fave street; Redchurch street. This street has a great selection of shops, street art, cool cafe’s and the hidden rooftop bar at Boundary where you can enjoy the sun all the way until it goes down.

The Aviary
10th Floor Montcalm Royal London House, 22-25 Finsbury Square, London EC2A 1DX
This cool new hotspot just off Liverpool street station just opened it’s doors a couple of months ago. The decor has the ultimate Instagram factor, the view is stunning and the roof terrace brings you back to a beach bar vibe with a sophisticated style. There’s an outside bar and the sofa’s and chairs are so comfy that you never want to go home…

Netil 360
1 Westgate St, London E8 3RL
Cool workspace, cafe, restaurant, outside movie theater… Netil360 has the whole package of the East London creative scene. They spent months revamping the rooftop bar and on the 1st of April doors opened again, check it out because it was definitely worth waiting for and belongs to the one of the best terraces and rooftops in East London.

Colombia road on Sunday
Ezra St, Bethnal Green, London E2 7RH
Not necessary a terrace, but Colombia road should be on this list. There’s a sunny little square on Ezra street, just off the flower market. Pop into the royal oak for a cold one and just chill on the street listening to some live bossa nova by street musicians to complete your perfect Sunday.

Mr. & Mrs. Watson, a Vegan Food Bar to open in Amsterdam

If you are following the latest food trends a little bit, you know that plant based food is making waves right now. Many cities around the world cater vegans and vegetarians with amazing vegan hotspots and Amsterdam couldn’t stay behind. Mr. & Mrs. Watson is going to be a vegan food bar in the heart of Amsterdam and opening this coming July!

adam-jaime-119568

The idea to open a plant based food bar came only natural when founders Aleid Koopal & Kirsi Rautiainen discovered that there is only 1 vegan restaurant per 1000 vegans in Amsterdam while in Berlin and New York you can find vegan restaurants all over the place. They thought this was way to less of course and with the current knowledge about climate change, they knew something had to change. Did you know that the agriculture industry is causing more pollution than the whole transport industry combined together?? (yes, this includes airplanes!) Crazy right? No wonder people – that used to love meat, become flexitarians or even vegan.

Some shocking facts

So back to Mr. & Mrs. Watson. What will they serve and what can we expect from this vegan food bar? For a sneak peak you should check out their Instagram account! (looking goood) Expect vegan pizza’s, pad Thai, cakes, waffles, special drinks and even vegan cheese! Their mission: to make vegan food attractive and more accessible to a larger audience. They explain more in this video:

We are looking forward to this one when it opens and of course we will keep you updated!

Opening of Ferilli’s at The College Hotel

Ladies and gents, it’s time to suit up, put on your prettiest dress, polish your shoes, grab your highest heels and head over to Ferilli’s at the College Hotel. This new fine-dining hotspot will make you feel as if you left Amsterdam and ran away to upper-class Manhattan, chique bartenders included. A perfect, romantic night is waiting to happen. So, have something to celebrate? Or are you in need of a unique place to spend the evening? This Italian hideaway in the posh College Hotel is your perfect getaway for every special occasion (the fact that it’s Friday, weekend or whatever is also a special occasion if you ask me).

Bites at the opening of Ferilli’s

Just think of the most delicious Limoncello cocktails (Gin/Tonics are so last year), combined with Prosecco for that extra sparkle. And the perfect Italian appetizers, simple, pure flavors with that certain je ne sais quoi (yeah, I know, that’s not Italian) which will make you want to eat more and more. Oysters with lemon, tomato jelly with homemade pesto, polenta, tempura ansjovis, Italian sausage, oh such a pleasure. It’s perfect, and that’s no surprise with Michelinchef Donatella Zampoli at the reins of the kitchen. There is no doubt that you will find quality on your plate.

cocktails-at-Ferilli’s

But that food won’t taste as good if you are not dining in a nice atmosphere. Well, they got that part covered. From the fully stocked bar (hello great wine and Peroni beers) to the lighting, to the crisp white tables to the art, the fireplace and the occasional mirrored wall. Even the powder rooms are high class. The whole of Ferilli’s just oozes style, classy cozyness and luxury. You go here to get pampered. And if the weather allows it, a big secluded terrace will welcome you for a sip, a laugh and a ray of sunshine.

garden-of-Ferilli’s

I have to say, Ferilli’s really pulled it off at the College Hotel. Everything is designed for you to make memories. I can’t wait to find an excuse.. euh, occasion to go there to enjoy a special night, can you?

13 x Best Terraces In Amsterdam West

The sun is out and so are the people. During the week, people run out of their offices when the clock hits five and try to find the best spot to enjoy the last sun-rays of the day. In the weekends you need to be quick because the best sunny spots go fast. So where exactly are those places? Well, as Amsterdam West is my area, I did a little research and came to the conclusion that these are the best places where you can enjoy the sunlight until it goes down.

Yumler
This place just opened (read our review) and when I walked in last week, they were just installing their outside terrace. It’s the perfect place for your Friday night drinks as they host a few parties now and then. www.yumler.nl

Yumler

De school
Too cool for school? Well, not this one! Not far from Yumler, you will find this hotspot. Besides being an awesome nightclub with some of the biggest underground DJ’s, it’s also the house of a wonderful restaurant, cafe and gym with a large terrace! www.deschoolamsterdam.nl

Cafe Zurich
Probably one of my favorite terraces in Amsterdam West! It’s large and wide with many seats available. The service is good and the drinks are cold. Just what you need when the sun is out. Read more about Zurich here.

Frits
Across Zurich you will find bar Frits on the same square they call “Mecatorplein”. They serve a large range of beers so it’s always buzzing until the sun goes down and that’s when people go inside the bar. www.frits-amsterdam.nl

Bureau
Opened last year, this is rooftop heaven. You must visit Bureau if you haven’t been! Enjoy the garden, chickens and sunshine. It’s probably one of our favorite terraces in Amsterdam West. For more pictures and impressions, check our article.

An oldie but still a goodie. It’s also great for people watching as it’s situated next to a roundabout. www.razmataz.nl

A bit tucked away in between the World Fashion Center and an apartment complex, it’s the perfect terrace for after work drinks or your afternoon coffee in the sun. www.staal.bar

De Bakkerswinkel
Great coffee, and tasty scones! We love this place right at the entrance of Westerpark. Oh, and the outside area at the back of the Bakkerswinkel is pretty good too. Nothing fancy but great for friends and people with babies. www.debakkerswinkel.nl

Mossel & Gin
Oysters and Gin are a great combination and you can get the best over at Mossel & Gin. Drink cocktails and eat until the sun goes down. Right on the Westergas area, this cozy terrace is great for catching up with friends! www.mosselengin.nl

Westergasterras
Also on the Westergas, you will find this extremely large terrace that is partly covered and there is an open lounge area where you want to sit for days, looking over the water. They have just restyled so have a look!  www.westergasterras.nl

Cedars
Not many people have heard of this restaurant because it’s situated below the A10 highway and the road that leads to Hoofddorpplein. It has some of the best outside seating in Amsterdam West, believe me. It’s overlooking the water and you can order some tasty Lebanese bites. Service can be a bit slow but if you don’t mind that, you will love it! www.cedars.nl

Hotel Pillows Anna van den Vondel Amsterdam

Amsterdam, booming more than ever! Brand new hotels are popping up like mushrooms. Especially the small boutique hotels catch my attention, I’m lovin’ them! I don’t like the ‘room factories’, the great hotels with hundreds of unoriginal, non charming rooms. If I have to choose between these giants and the small, intimate ones, I definitely pick the last, no doubt! Are you also a ‘boutique lover’? Lucky you! Last springtime week – my gosh, wish we had this kind of flowering, friendly season all year around – I took a look at the newest boutique gem in Amsterdam. Say hi to Anna van den Vondel, the first scion of the completely new (inter)national hospitality brand ‘Pillows’.

Expect a cozy, luxury and an Instagramable, pastel colored interior

Anna van den Vondel, situated next to the lovely Vondelpark in one of the most authentic, decadent neighborhoods of Amsterdam. With a total of 31 luxury rooms she certainly deserves the title ‘boutique’. Upon entry I was positively surprised by the bright, stylish entrance. I didn’t get the feeling I walked into a ‘normal’ hotel. No reception immediately in your face, no obtrusiveness, just a relaxed ‘feeling like home’ vibe and genuine hospitality. Pillows has given the definition of ‘hotel’ a whole new twist! Expect a cozy, luxury and an Instagramable, pastel colored interior. Hands up for the amazing styling skills of the hotel owner, all my credits for her. At the moment I’m busy with furnishing my own little house in the lively East of Amsterdam and I can tell you that’s hard enough haha!

Just a small impression of Anna’s room

Is breakfast your favorite meal of the day? Good news! At Pillows Anna van den Vondel they serve all day breakfast, ye-hesss! They create all the yummy food and bites in their beauty of a cooking island in the middle of the living room. I’ve never seen something like this before in a hotel, love it! Imagine you can eat poached eggs, croissants and Greek yoghurt at 7 a.m., 1 or even at 7 pm. Would you rather have dinner in the morning, afternoon or night? No worries, there’s also a clock-less dining menu. During the tasting menu which I had last week I tried the juicy mini-burgers and fresh Caesar salad with very tender grilled chicken breast, keep these two in mind! Side note: all the staff is multi-functional trained. This means they can play any hotel role, so cool! Besides I’m very enthusiastic about Anna, her rooms and food, it’s noteworthy that she isn’t accessible for wheelchairs or for people who have difficulty walking.

I definitely keep this hidden gem in mind when family or friends are coming over! They’ve come through my perfectionist test ;) Oh and when I’m around I’ll certainly do a drink (or two, or three) with a mini-burger on the side. See ya there?

Love,

Sharmaine

P.s. Currently they’re working on a webshop. This is the place to be where you can buy all the amazing, stylish (interior) stuff of the boutique hotel. I’m already a fan of the scented candle, whose scent you can smell through the hotel hallways. Shopaholics beware!

Boezemvriend » Baby, Boob, Shop and Cafe

Now that I’m a mother, I need to selectively search for those places where I can open my laptop, do some work, enjoy a coffee and breastfeed my baby without people giving me that strange look. Even though breastfeeding is totally natural and a necessity for your baby, some people still think it’s strange when a woman is breastfeeding her child in public. Boezemvriend is one of those places where it’s possible to do this without feeling weird about it while enjoying a tasty latte.

Boezemvriend
Still controversial even though breastfeeding is the world’s most natural thing. Source

Breastfeeding Consultancy
As a new mother I know how tough the first few weeks can be when it comes to breastfeeding. Boezemvriend is a lactation consultancy practice, where you can ask all your questions about and around breastfeeding. You can also book a lactation consultant (if needed, they can visit you at home), you can follow courses and buy or rent breast pumps. (always handy!) If you want to check if it’s for you, you can join their monthly birth cafe where you can ask questions to a professional consultant and meet new parents, for free!

Who says that breastfeeding-friendly cafe’s can’t be cool?

The Cafe
Super nice! I was surprised about the great tasting coffee, healthy muffins and the best hummus & grilled vegetables sandwich I ever tasted! Yes, this cafe isn’t just a secondary attachment to Boezenvriend, no it’s a place I would recommend to all people. And yes, it’s mostly visited by mothers (or fathers) with a baby or young child. It’s particularly great for that group of customers because you can totally relax. When a baby is crying, no one is looking annoyed because they all understand. Breastfeeding is only encouraged (and the women are still very discreet, covering their breast with a small blanket)

Boezemvriend Cafe Amsterdam

The Store
Here you can find all sorts of baby related stuff. From clothes, blankets, car seats, baby carriers to maternity wear. Labels are mostly organic and super stylish. It’s not cheap but the quality is very good so if you want to score a great baby present for you or a friend, Boezemvriend is a great option!

Koala Republic Amsterdam

Innovating seats, a Scandinavian and Japanese look plus healthy homemade food. Koala Republic has opened their doors on the Jan Evertsenstraat in Amsterdam West.

The Jan-Eef, as locals call it, is one of the most developing streets in Amsterdam at the moment. 5 years ago it may have looked a bit miserable, but once the Mercatorsquare was re-done, the rest of the neighborhood followed the example and new entrepreneurs saw the light. One by one, new shops and coffee bars started opening (like T’s where we love to drink our popcorn tea!)

Koala Republic
Innovating seats at Koala Republic

Koala Republic is one of those new hotspots and you may discovered it by chance because it’s a bit tucked away next to a döner shop and a jewelry store. We walked inside for a quick peek and immediately took note of the cool interior. There is a sky high table for 2 where you’ll need to climb the stairs, and there are seats with swings for your feet. You can also sit on the bright orange cushions, chill at the bar or grab a larger table in the back.

Where will you sit?

The food menu at Koala Republic is very healthy but far from being boring. Everything is homemade. From eggs to a Indonesian style chicken broth (Soto) and a corn tortilla wrap, they even serve healthy fries made from vegetables served with a wasabi mayonaise. Besides eating in, you can also buy some of their products like coffee and peanut butter.

Go and check this new place out, even if it’s only to climb up those stairs and drink your coffee from a new perspective.

5 x The Best Breakfast Spots in West Village, New York

In a completely food-obsessed city, the West Village seems to be a breakfast focal point. Not only is the food incredible, but the environment of that particular neighborhood gives you a warm and fuzzy feeling to kick off the start of your day. Instead of skyscrapers, you’ll find brownstone, pre-war buildings complete with classic New York fire escapes and every tree-lined, cobblestone street seems to be the home of some cozy, quaint restaurant packed with people looking for a delicious meal and good coffee. Although I’m sure there are dozens of fabulous options to choose from, here are five of my favorite Breakfast Spots In West Village.

Hundred Acres – 38 Macdougal St
Located right on the borderline of the West Village, SoHo and Greenwich Village, Hundred Acres is a Mediterranean style restaurant that never disappoints at breakfast time. Unlike a lot of other typical NYC breakfast spots, Hundred Acres is spacious so a good choice is you have a large party – and they have a backyard garden area! They also take reservations on OpenTable which is super convenient when looking for the right place to eat. The lemon ricotta pancakes and the cinnamon rolls are both superb! www.hundredacresnyc.com

Monument Lane – 103 Greenwich Ave
Any place with chicken & waffles on the menu gets an automatic thumbs up in my book. With outside seating during the warmer seasons, Monument Lane is a great place to people watch. Good food, friendly staff and a varying menu with plenty of different options to choose from – what more could you ask for?! They also give you an adorable little notebook to sign when you get the bill – it’s all about the little details and one of the reasons why it’s one of my favorite breakfast spots in West Village. www.monumentlane.com

Bluestone Lane – 30 Carmine St (*multiple locations)
A casual, Australian cafe that serves great coffee and simple brunch items. One of my favorite things about it – the staff are all Aussies! I like that this cafe gives me a taste of a different part of the world, all the way down to the carefully chosen decor. The avocado smash and the berry bowl are both delicious! www.bluestonelaneny.com

The Wild Son – 53 Little W 12th St
This restaurant is located on the border of the West Village and The Meatpacking District right next to the Hudson River. It’s small, so not ideal for large parties, but if you’re looking for a place to grab a coffee and some breakfast with a friend, this adorable restaurant is a great choice. They don’t take reservations, but stop in to put your name down and take a stroll along The High Line while you wait. You can’t go wrong with the blueberry corn waffles! www.thewildsonnyc.com

Now open » Food Canteen Yumler

I live in Amsterdam New West and although this is outside the infamous “ring” road in Amsterdam, it is slowly becoming a place for new businesses, start ups and cool places. Last year De School and restaurant Bureau proved that New West is developing and the locals love it. This week it was time to add another name to the area and Yumler openend. Time to check out what this place is all about.

Eat In, Take Out & Delivery Concept
You can describe Yumler as a fancy/ hip & happening food canteen. It’s a 3.0 canteen version that is now situated in an old building that used to function as the gymnastic class from a technical University. The idea behind Yumler is that the food is good, healthy but reasonably priced. There is no table service but you order and pay at the bar where you can take your own drinks and sandwiches to your table. The concept was designed for the YOUNG URBAN CITIZEN that doesn’t always have the time for grocery shopping and cooking. You can eat in, take out or use the Yumler app to order your food and get it delivered at your doorstep.

Yumler Canteen

“Yumler  is not there for the ‘guilty pleasure’. We are here for all those other times in the week, when you want to eat healthy but do not have the time to cook. ” – Andras Caron, founder Yumler

Yumler is an idea from entrepreneurs Andras Caron (son of French chef Alain Caron and founder of big events like Valhalla and Amsterdam Open Air) and Jan Willem van der Kuip (co-founder of the Vondel Gym). Their inspiration comes from chefs like Yotam Ottolenghi, Donna Hay en Jamie Oliver. A lot of variation, low key, tasty and affordable. The most expensive dish on the menu is €12,-. The menu will change on a weekly basis and the dishes are nutritious and healthy.

yumler interior

We really love the interior which features a lot of green combined with trendy lights, steel furniture that will make this canteen look slick yet cozy. Andras Caron told us that they will also use the space to host parties and Friday after work drinks. And even better, they have a huge terrace that will open as soon as the sun is out. We can’t wait for the app to be live so I, Elke can finally order some decent food even though I do not live inside “The Ring” of Amsterdam.
